We would like to express our deepest sympathies to those who are in the midst of extraordinary suffering resulting from the mega-earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as well as those who are still displaced by the combined disasters and living as evacuees. We sincerely pray for the peaceful repose of those victims killed by the disaster, and we fervently hope that the radiation threat from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant destroyed by the tsunami is ended as soon as possible. Finally, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the people of Canada and other countries in the world who have been giving heartfelt support and encouragement to the Japanese victims of this disaster. Japanese Canadian Community Organization of Victoria [JCCO Victoria] はカナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州の州都，ビクトリア市に本拠を置く非営利組織で，主にGreater Victoria地域にお住まいの日本人やその子孫の方々，そして日本文化や日本社会に関心のある方々のために実際的で，かつ，上質の情報を提供する活動を行っています。
そのひとつが，どなたでも無料購読できるニュースレター「Japonism Victoria」の発行です。Japonism Victoriaはカナダというモザイク国家のなかで，日本人およびその子孫の方々──日系──がそれぞれ日系のひとりとしてどのように生きるべきかなど，単なる便利情報を超え，さまざまな事柄を考える材料を提供するように努めています。
JCCO Victoriaの活動のもうひとつの柱はこのウェブサイトの運営です。Greater Victoria地域には残念ながら日系コミュニティセンターがありません。コミュニティセンターは人々が自由に集える，いわばコミュニティのシンボル的存在でもあるのですが，このウェブサイトは物理的な空間としてのセンターを建設する代わりに，サイバースペース上にコミュニティセンター機能を構築するものです。
このウェブサイトは，日系コミュニティのための情報集約センターとしての役割をになう構成・運営としています。商業的ウェブサイトや個人的趣味のウェブサイトのように頻繁にはアップデートはできませんが，掲載する情報はできる限り公正かつ正確で役立つものとするよう努めています。
Japanese Canadian Community Organization of Victoria [JCCO Victoria] is a non-profit organization based in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. JCCO Victoria is taking an active part of the Nikkei community in Greater Victoria to support people of Japanese origin and their descendants as well as all who are interested in Japan or Japanese culture, by providing them with practical and yet high-quality information.
One distinguished feature of JCCO Victoria is the publication of free newsletter “Japonism Victoria” which is available to anyone in Canada and any other countries. With the publication of Japonism Victoria, we are making best efforts to provide people of Japanese origin and their descendants, i.e., Nikkei, with a variety of materials to help them think of how they should/could live in the mosaic country of Canada as a Nikkei, for example.
Another important project of JCCO Victoria is the operation of this website. Unfortunately, in Greater Victoria there is no Japanese community center which could be a focus for the community at which, and around which, people could come together. In place of building a community center having a physical presence, this website virtually provides the function of such a community center in cyberspace.
This website is designed to provide resources specifically for the Nikkei community in Greater Victoria. Unlike commercialized websites or personal enthusiastic websites, this website will not be updated so frequently. However, we believe we can upload correct and impartial information best suited to the Nikkei community.

ビクトリアの南端，Ross Bayに面する一角に子ども56名を含む初期日本人移民153名が眠るRoss Bay Cemetery（ロスベイ墓地）があります。戦争や災害で荒れた墓標が1990年代に日本人・日系人有志による「太平洋懸け橋グループ」の手で再建整備され，合同慰霊碑も建立されました。日本では墓地は宗教施設ですが，ここRoss Bay Cemeteryはすでにカナダの文化遺産となっており，初期日本人移民の墓もその重要な一部となっています。 At the southern end of Victoria facing Ross Bay, is Ross Bay Cemetery where 153 early Japanese immigrants, including 56 children, rest. The grave markers, which were severely damaged by the war and disasters, were reconstructed and reorganized in the 1990s by the “Pacific-Ocean Kake-Hashi group” of Japanese and Japanese-Canadian volunteers (“Kake-Hashi” means “bridge”), and a memorial monument was built there. Although in Japan a graveyard is a religious spot, here, Ross Bay Cemetery has become a Canadian cultural heritage site, and the burials of the early Japanese immigrants are a significant part of that heritage. |
